Hardwood Refinishing

Refinishing your hardwood floors can give your home a new, improved look without the need of purchasing new flooring. When refinishing wood floors, attention to detail is a must! The time frame for a refinishing project can vary between three and seven days, depending on the area, stain color and type of polyurethane used. The beginning process of refinishing hardwood floors starts with moving your furniture, removing the existing shoe molding or quarter round, and replacing any damaged boards. We also cover any openings or cabinets to protect against dust caused during the refinishing. All our sanding machines have a dust free system, offering a 95% dust free experience.

Steps to Hardwood Refinishing

Hardwood Refinishing

Sanding

Sanding eliminates scratches, levels the floor, and brings back the grain; one of the attributes of a hardwood floor. Several passes with the sanding tool will be required to achieve a smooth finish. We sand the entire center portion of the floor using a drum sander. Once the main portion of the floor has been sanded we use an edge sander to sand areas where the drum sander did not reach using the same grit sandpaper used with the drum sander. In addition, we use a hand-sand or use a detail sander to reach the corners.

Staining

After the floors are sanded and vacuumed, we are going to add the desired stain color to the hardwood. Try to test a small area before doing the whole floor. Stain colors vary from light and natural colors to darker ones. Minwax is a very popular brand of stain and offers a wide range of colors for your hardwood floors: Natural, Golden Oak, Provincial, Red Oak, Ipswich Pine, Sedona Red, Colonial Maple, Red Mahagony, Early American, Gunstock, English Chestnut, Cherry, Dark Walnut, Jacobean, Ebony.

Finishing

The next step of the refinishing process includes applying the polyurethane or shine on the hardwood floors. You can finish your floors with a satin, semi-gloss, or high gloss look depending on your taste. For a good outcome, a hardwood floor needs at least 2 or 3 applications of oil-based finish and at least 3-4 finishes for the water-based ones. The drying time for a water based finish is considerably shorter (2-4 hours) than an oil based finish (10-12 hours) depending on the temperature and humidity.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Don’t just take it from us, let our customers do the talking!

I could not be more pleased. Peter and his crew did such a good job. We added hardwoodflooring in our den and living room and tile in our bathrooms plus more. The hardwood flooring we wanted in the den and livingroom needed to match existing hardwoodflooring in the Kitchen and Foyer. It was an EXACT match. The quality of his work was superb, price was VERY affordable and he is someone you can rely on and trust. He is the ideal contractor! He also put new tile in 3 of my bathrooms. His work was beautiful. VERY PRECISE!!! He pays attention to detail!
